In academic writing, referencing is the acknowledging and naming the sources, authors and the years of publication of the work that you sourced your research from.

This means listing these sources and their details in a separate page. However this listing is done using guidelines that are used to determine whether you sourced your work from a journal, book or a website. This is where referencing styles chip in.

The common types of referencing styles are APA, MLA, CHICAGO, and HARVARD.
